Medal of Honor Grove Highway dedicated

SCHUYLKILL — A section of Route 23 known as the Medal of Honor Grove Highway was dedicated at a ceremony Thursday morning at the Freedoms Foundation.
The stretch of highway is situated between Chester County’s border with Montgomery County and Route 100 near the Medal of Honor Grove.
“Today is one of the really joyous days in Chester County,” said State Senator Andy Dinniman, D-19th, of West Whiteland, who introduced legislation to ceremonially rededicate the road earlier this year. “If it hadn’t been for the veterans of this country and those who received the highest medal our nation can give, we wouldn’t be here. Unanimously passed by both the House and Senate, the legislation was recently signed into law as Act 80 of 2011 by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to honor our veterans who have received our nation’s highest military honor and to remind residents and motorists that the Medal of Honor Grove, a unique and historic memorial site, is located right here in Chester County,” Dinniman said.
Dinniman was joined at the event by PennDOT officials, local veterans, students from Phoenixville High School and supervisors from neighboring townships. Also in attendance were the Friends of the Medal of Honor Grove and guest speaker, Medal of Honor Recipient Major General James Livingston, USMC (Ret.).
“We share this with you,” Livingston said. “This is not a Medal of Honor deal today; it’s a veteran’s deal and an American deal.” View photos here

Today was a special day. It never rained and about 22 volunteers came out to pick up sticks and branches and pile them by the road. 3 trucks and trailers then took 7 tightly tied down loads of sticks and branches to the compost site to a total of over 2 tons!
Thank you to Dale, Don, Marcelle, Joe, Jon, Bill, Ryan, Danny, Kacergis family, Devon 50 Troop, Missy & Ray for spending part of your day caring for the Grove. Apologies to anyone who didn’t sign it and we missed. View photos here
